Travel the country to meet the people transforming family and community engagement—and see how you can too!

This summer, Roadtrip Nation is sending three educators early in their careers on a road trip to explore how they can navigate roadblocks and work with families to ensure they stay engaged in their children’s futures.

Fueled by support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and Strada Education Network, these three roadtrippers will travel across the country to talk to educators, administrators, and others who are taking new approaches to family and community engagement.

Maybe you feel disheartened about how teachers and their communities have interacted lately. Struggles over digital learning, chaotic school board meetings, and breakdowns in student support have all grabbed headlines for the last several years. While you may see this on the news, it’s not what’s happening in real life! Teachers and families agree far more often than they disagree because they share the same priorities: helping kids succeed!

That’s why we want to show you there’s actually never been a more exciting and inspiring time to interface with your community as an educator! Remember that old saying? “Look for the helpers.” We want to show you just where you can find them!

This road trip will focus on solutions and conversations to provide you with hope, motivation, and a sense of possibility. If you’re ready to shift the narrative about families and teachers, and what approaches are working to engage communities in students’ success, then we want you to come on the adventure of a lifetime with us!

Who’s Roadtrip Nation?

Hi! We’re Roadtrip Nation, and for over 20 years, we’ve been sending people on road trips in our green RV to explore possibilities for their futures. We believe there’s power in getting out there, trying something new, and talking to people whose stories could change your life—and that’s why we want to send you on this journey.

Who we’re looking for:

We’re looking for educators early in their career paths with some experience in family engagement. Ever had a parent-teacher conference or met with a student’s guardian? Then congrats! You’re exactly who we’re looking for! If you feel you have something to offer to this important conversation about the intersection between educators, students, families, and communities, please don’t hesitate to apply. Even more importantly, if you have questions, concerns, and frustrations about family engagement as an educator, we definitely want you to apply! You’ll get to talk with some of the top minds in the field to help shape your own approaches to community engagement in the future.

What’s this experience all about?

First of all, this is SO much more than a free road trip. (Although…it is free!) This will be a life-changing investment into your personal and career development. You’ll be asked to schedule and conduct interviews with professionals you’ve never met, all while living on the road with other roadtrippers and members of the Roadtrip Nation crew. And you’ll be filmed along the way—so you’ll need to open up to the experience, and get totally candid at times. But you’ll also get to see the country in a whole new way, and meet incredible people—and potential mentors—who can help guide you along your career path. So if you’re ready for a transformative opportunity, we urge you to apply for this trip!

Additional Info:

  • Applicants must be available to commit to 3 to 4 weeks of travel in mid to late July.

  • All travel expenses—plus a daily stipend for personal expenses—are paid for by Roadtrip Nation.

  • The trip will be filmed, and you’ll be asked to share your thoughts and feelings on-camera throughout the journey. The resulting documentary may be shown on public television, and/or used in Roadtrip Nation’s educational tools.

  • If chosen, you’ll help plan the trip around your interests and career aspirations—so you’ll need to work with Roadtrip Nation to research and book interviews with the career role models you’d like to speak with!

  • If selected, you’ll have access to a mental health professional throughout the experience to talk about how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking. You’ll also receive career coaching from InsideTrack after the road trip concludes.

Have questions? Check out our FAQ page.

How the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our road trips and applications: Your health and safety and the safety of our crew is our main priority, and we won’t hit the road until it’s safe to do so. We’re continuing with our process of selecting participants for this trip, though it’s possible that deadlines and travel dates may shift as the situation with COVID-19 evolves. If dates do change, we’ll update them here, and you by email if you’ve already applied. If you have any questions, you can always email us at roadtrips@roadtripnation.org.
