Far too often, technological innovations deepen social inequities rather than help solve them. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

As technological tools advance, so do our abilities to change the world for the better. We can develop tech for the common good—but we need all hands on deck to do it: programmers and public policy professionals, data scientists and philosophers, computer scientists and social scientists.

In other words, no matter what you want to do—there’s room for you in the world of public interest technology if your why is making tomorrow more just and equitable than today.

What Is Public Interest Technology?

Public interest technology is a field wide enough to include artists, anthropologists, and AI wizards. It’s big enough for all sorts of people because it takes all sorts of people to solve the societal problems facing, well… all sorts of people!

Sure, tech fuels the sleekest smartphones and most innovative EVs, but public interest tech focuses on ensuring the most good for the most people. It’s about ensuring technology can provide everyone with must-haves, instead of the most privileged with nice-to-haves.

So if you’re passionate about increasing access to healthcare, housing, healthy ecosystems, or education; if you want a career where you can advance the common good; if you want to create a world where justice and dignity for all people is the norm instead of an afterthought, there’s a place for you in the world of public interest technology.

What to Expect

On this road trip, you’ll meet with a diverse group of professionals working in public interest technology. Get an up-close and personal look at the wide variety of career paths, skills, and experiences available to you as you strive to find a job that fits you like a glove and changes the world for the better.

Innovative technology is important when it comes to change, but nowhere near as important as innovative people. So we want you to meet as many of those people as you can!

Who We’re Looking for:

  • You’re interested in tech as a tool for social change

  • Planning to pursue a career in tech? Great! We’d love to have you.

  • Still, don’t disqualify yourself if you’re not planning to go into tech specifically. Public interest technology has room for all sorts of people in all sorts of jobs

  • The main ingredients we’re looking for are someone who believes a better future is possible and thinks tech can help us get there!

  • You’re excited to explore all how everything from public policy to philosophy intersects with innovation for the common good.

What is this for?

You’ll be applying to be part of Roadtrip Nation’s public television series about how people find their paths in life. And we want to highlight you and share your story too.

You’ll meet with a diverse group of professionals working in public interest technology. We'll highlight a variety of career paths, skills, and experiences, showing the impact of PIT on real-world issues. Along the way, you’ll learn how you can find where you fit in building a future that works for all of us.

Still, this is so much more than a TV show—it’s an opportunity for you to get out there, get exposure to new paths and possibilities, and talk to people whose stories can change your life.

Additional Information:

  • We’ll be filming in September, and we’ll work with you to schedule around your life commitments during that time.

  • All travel expenses—plus a daily stipend for personal expenses—are paid for by Roadtrip Nation. We’ll work with you to make sure the stipend covers what you need to be able to participate.

  • The experience will be filmed, and you’ll be asked to share your thoughts and feelings on-camera throughout the journey. The resulting documentary may be shown on public television, and/or used in Roadtrip Nation’s educational tools.

  • If selected, you’ll help plan the experience around your interests and career aspirations—so you’ll need to work with Roadtrip Nation to research and book interviews with the career role models you’d like to speak with.

  • After filming is over, we’ll provide you with six months of free personalized career coaching and support from InsideTrack to help you pursue your life, education, and career goals.
